54 elephants are released from their chains and given a new home

54 elephants in chains were released thanks to the help of Saengduen Lek Chailert and her Save Elephant Foundation. Chokchai Elephant Camp had more than eight elephants for shows and riding.

When Chokchai Elephant Camp shut down, elephants no longer had work, and most of them were sold because their owners needed money. These elephants were kept in chains, and many of them were younglings.

The elephants were trained to do tricks like riding a bike, playing soccer, bowing, and more. Mothers and babies were separated, and the babies hadn’t been weaned off milk yet.

Once the elephants were released from their chains, many of them were reunited. Unfortunately, not all of them survived before being given the freedom they deserved.

An elephant needs to get through a lot of adjustment after living a life in chains. They had gotten accustomed to the restricted movement and being neglected.

It takes lots of time and effort to make the detained elephants become part of a bigger group and family. The hard work of the Save Elephant Foundation begins with a single step, then they continue on from there.

Now the beautiful elephants have space where they can roam freely and be happy. They are surrounded by deep green land and clear blue skies up above.
