Mkhaya the baby elephant is 4 months old and just learning to use her trunk. The trainers at the San Diego Safari Park work with her on how to use this most agile of instruments.
An elephant’s trunk is an amazing thing. In an adult elephant, it has the strength to crush cement blocks, and the agility to pick up one playing card from a deck.
Baby elephant Mkhaya is too young to know all this and is just learning the basics at this point. Her trainer works with her on building the muscle memory she will use with her trunk throughout her life.
