The more people learn about animals, the easier it becomes to see ourselves in them. Khanyisa and her herd were a perfect example as they played together in the South African savannah.
This day began with a visit to a mound. As always, little Khanyisa was determined to get as much fun out of the day as she could. So, she was the first elephant to roll around in the dirt.
Khanyisa made it look so fun that the 15-year-old elephant, Limpopo, decided to give rolling in the dirt a try, something that was not easy for such a large elephant.
But not all the elephants were as enamored by the albino calf. When Khanyisa got up to join her older sister, Timisa, her other sister, Pisa, got annoyed or jealous and started pushing her away.
Khanyisa was not about to give up. She gently inserted herself between Timisa and Pisa, and finally, her jealous sister let her play in peace. With Pisa gone, Khanyisa challenged Timisa to a sparring match.
With Khanyisa’s protective adoptive mother, Lundi, acting as referee, the game began. At first, it looked like Timisa might win, but Khanyisa took the higher ground and approached her sister again.
The sparring match ended with a tie, with Khanyisa wandering off to spend time with the other elephants. What a fascinating window into the secret lives of these adorable elephants.
