Angry baby seal is happy after being released back into the wild

Phoenix was a baby seal that was angry to be rescued until he realized he was actually being helped to survive. He was found in Ireland after his mother abandoned him.

Marius, a volunteer for Seal Rescue Ireland, picked up Phoenix and transported him to the rescue center. Phoenix was hissing at anyone who got close to him.

After handing over Phoenix to Melanie, the Executive Director of Seal Rescue Ireland, Marius hoped the baby seal would recover fully. Melanie noted that Phoenix was really light, being only 10 kilos.

Phoenix should have been much larger and was probably orphaned before his mother taught him how to hunt or even eat on his own. They had to put him through “fish school.”

While in a tub, they introduced Phoenix to solid fish so he could get used to them being in the water with him. Once he understood how to eat, Phoenix was moved to the pools where there were other seals.

Phoenix learned to compete against other seals, and they showed him more behaviors he had not known. After a few months, he gained enough weight to be released into the wild.

The water was calm, and Phoenix moved out of his cage slowly until he felt the welcome of the sea. Every seal that they rescue is important for the population of seals in Ireland.
