Because they are slow, languid creatures, sloths are not usually animals that make it to the front page, but Chuwie was a special case, displaying a new side to sloths beyond the laziness they are known for.

Chuwie developed an adorable relationship with a Beagle named Seven. Whenever it was time for the sloth’s canine friend to leave, Chuwie would pet him and give his friend a tender goodbye.
When Juan Carlos and Haydee first rescued Chuwie, they worried that the sloth might not survive. While Chuwie was relaxing in his tree, a powerline touched him, and he received a life-threatening shock.

The entire affair deeply rattled Chuwie. “He was absolutely terrified and had no idea what was going on,” said Juan. Fortunately, the veterinarian informed them that Chuwie would be able to recover.
At the center of the rehabilitation was respect for Chuwie. “We gave him space while he recovered,” said Haydee. “He rested, regained his strength and we kept the burns clean for him. Little by little, he was feeling better.”

When Chuwie recovered, he let his rescuers come closer to him. That was when Seven and Chuwie started interacting. “Seven’s persistence paid off in a big way,” said Juan. “That’s how they became best friends.”
While Chuwie’s unhealed claws prevented him from living in the wild, the future looked bright for the rescued sloth. “Chuwie will remain the ambassador of our project and Seven’s best friend,” said Haydee.
