This Chilling Mashup Of “O Holy Night” And “Hallelujah” Will Leave You Asking For More!

Every year around Christmas time the airwaves and the internet are inundated with new versions of old classics. A punk rock rendition of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer” shares space with an operatic take on “Little Drummer Boy”, and everything in between. Many of these songs come out sounding beautifully, and are welcome takes on tunes we’ve heard hundreds of times. But it’s especially refreshing when an artist releases something really unique, as is the case with the Jennifer Nettle’s video below.

Nettles is a United States based country music singer who was gifted with the voice of an angel. She’s been performing her entire life, starting her musical and acting career by participating in shows at her local Baptist church, and at the community center in her town. In the mid-90s, while attending Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, she formed the band Soul Miner’s Daughter, which went on to release two albums. Later on, she was part of the band Sugarland, for which she is most well known. However, I think her solo work is where she really shines, and this is the perfect example.

Many musicians have covered Leonard Cohen’s resounding classic, “Hallelujah.” Plenty more have released their own version of “O Holy Night” in honor of the Christmas season. What makes this mashup unique is how well Nettles has blended the two songs, creating something that is greater than the sum of it’s parts. Nettles voice is so powerful, which is practically a requirement to carry off any version of “Hallelujah.” The way she blends these songs together results in a chilling melody that will haunt you on through to the New Year, and beyond.
