Life has an uncanny way of weaving beautiful tales. “Animals too have tales to tell if only we pause and listen,” I’d often say back in my days as a veterinarian.

There’s something deeply comforting about the bond between animals. Many a time, while tending to injured pets or nursing the frail ones, I would observe how animals, irrespective of species, seem to understand and comfort each other in ways we humans sometimes fail to comprehend.
Take for instance the heartwarming story of Jasper, a little raccoon who was abandoned during a rainstorm. He was found alone, shivering in a puddle, perhaps left behind for being the runt of his litter. I remember a similar incident with a small puppy who was left in the cold. Such tender souls, left to fend for themselves. Luckily, a kind woman found Jasper and turned to Carrie Long, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator at Texas Fawn and Friends.
Carrie, who primarily deals with deer rescue, opened her heart to this little creature in need. It was touch and go for Jasper, but under Carrie’s nurturing care, he not only survived but flourished.

Texas Fawn and Friends is a sprawling sanctuary, a haven for creatures great and small. Although Jasper was free to leave once he was strong, he chose to stay. Perhaps he felt a kinship with the other abandoned animals, especially the orphaned deer. Out of the 75 deer in the sanctuary, one named Hope caught Jasper’s attention. Hope, like Jasper, had faced the pain of abandonment early on. The two shared an immediate and profound connection.
Their camaraderie is heartwarming. Every time Jasper spots Hope, his tiny feet sprint towards her, his little arms reaching out to embrace his dear friend. The sight of him clambering onto Hope’s back, his arms wrapped lovingly around her neck, makes one believe in the purity of animal friendships.
Carrie fondly speaks of their unique relationship, “In the evenings, Hope lays next to him. They have this wonderful understanding between them.” Their video has touched over 55,000 hearts, a testament to the universal appeal of love and companionship.

Beyond the story of Jasper and Hope, Carrie’s dedication stands as a beacon for many. This year, she anticipates caring for around 100 orphaned fawns, ensuring they not only survive but thrive. “It’s very rewarding work,” she beams with pride.
