Every elder has a saying they share, and mine is, “Trust is a two-way street, built over time.” This age-old wisdom applies not only to people but to our animal friends as well. The bond between humans and animals can sometimes be so profound that it leaves us in awe.
Back in my veterinary days, I once encountered a stray dog so mistrustful, it took weeks to earn her trust. But when I witnessed the story of a man and his bond with a herd of elephants, it felt like revisiting those old days but on a much grander scale.
Nestled in Northern Thailand is the Elephant Nature Park, a haven where the gray giants of the jungle find rescue and rehabilitation. Known worldwide for its incredible efforts, the park owes its fame, in part, to Lek. This compassionate woman has the unique talent of singing these mammoth creatures to sleep. Yet, it seems Lek isn’t the only one at this park with such a deep bond.
A seemingly ordinary man in casual attire stands in a vast field. There’s nothing to suggest he’s anything but an average human. Yet, when he shouts the name “Kham-Lha,” the horizon is filled with the thunderous trumpeting of elephants. To many, such a sound might send shivers down the spine, but for this man, it was music to his ears.
One could only watch in awe and perhaps a little anxiety as a sprinting herd raced towards him. But, much like a dog recognizing the voice of its human, these elephants charged with excitement and love. Stopping just in time, they enveloped their human friend in what can only be described as a gigantic, affectionate embrace.
Walking amidst these majestic creatures, the man demonstrated the epitome of trust. It reminded me of the animals I’d encountered in my practice – every creature, be it a small pup or a towering elephant, thrives on trust and love.
This touching moment between man and elephant showcases the wonders of what time, care, and mutual respect can achieve. Elephants, though enormous, possess an intelligence and gentleness that’s truly admirable. It’s evident that the bond this man shares with the herd is built on mutual trust and deep affection.
