At Colby’s Crew Rescue, Big John, a senior horse and permanent resident at the shelter, was living a perfect bachelor life. In the mornings and evenings, he got his vet-prescribed beer and every day he had a massage from his personal massager.
“I wish I had Big John’s life right now,” said Allison. “He lives a life of luxury.” John even had a lifelong companion in the form of the miniature donkey, Cotton.
There was only one part missing from Big John’s charmed life. He did not have any female horses with whom he could socialize. “We tried a lot of horses, but he’s picky,” said Allison.
But all of that changed when Stardust arrived at Colby’s Crew Rescue. When the older female horse arrived, Allison and her team had already decided this senior horse would become a permanent resident at the sanctuary.
When Allison walked Stardust by Big John’s field, his behavior was completely different from before. He immediately seemed interested in this new female horse, and fortunately the feeling was mutual.
Within a few days, the horses were friends, and within weeks, Stardust and Big John were inseparable. The two horses did “the senior shuffle” together, ate together and stood together in the fields.
More than anything, Allison and her team at Colby’s Crew Rescue were happy they could provide a place for Stardust and Big John to happily live out their lives. “It just makes our hearts so full,” said Allison.
