A darling little elephant named Khanyisa was welcomed into the herd at sunrise by her adoptive mother, Lundi, and the herd’s matriarch, Tokwe.
These magnificent elephants possess an incredible sense of smell, and they gave Khanyisa a thorough sniff with their trunks, taking in her scent and that of her blanket. After this warm greeting, they set off on their first trek, and Khanyisa was given a chance to get to know her new family members, particularly the lively Timisa.
Khanyisa was taken care of by her allomothers, Bubi, Limpopo, Tokwe, and Kumbura, who showed her around the orphanage grounds and introduced her to the best grazing spots. The HERD (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development) TRUST has been on a 24-year journey to care for elephants that have been displaced or orphaned due to human-elephant conflict.
The Jabulani herd, featured in the video, consists of 16 elephants, with 11 orphans and the other five born into the herd. They established the Jabulani lodge nearby to ensure their efforts to care for the ever-growing herd are sustainable. The funds generated from this lodge go towards maintaining the orphanage and caring for the elephants.
