It’s an animal, a furry creature struggling to keep its head above water.

But the kayaker knows that he can’t keep the raccoon forever. It belongs in the wild, after all. So he takes it to a deer sanctuary on Big Pine Key, where he knows it will be safe and happy. As he watches it scamper off into the underbrush, he can’t help but feel a little sad to say goodbye.
