While dark clouds scroll across the South African sky, Khanyisa and her herd decided to take some time to forage. This presented the perfect opportunity for the baby albino elephant to practice her trunk skills.
Elephants have a reputation for being dexterous and deft with their trunks, but as is the case with most creatures, the babies are not so naturally gifted. Gaining dexterity takes practice.
Khanyisa and her herd searched for the perfect place to forage. They had nearly found it when Khanyisa got distracted by a puddle and decided to play in the water.
Thanks to the older elephant, Fishan, Khanyisa got back on track with practicing her foraging with the rest of her herd. Watching her elders, Khanyisa followed their example and even did a little victory dance when she pulled a plant free for herself.
A little further ahead, Khanyisa found a tasty plant. Unfortunately, Khanyisa’s trunk skills did not seem up to the task. She struggled for minutes before she finally got on her knees and used her teeth to bite some of it off.
But now that she’d had a taste, Khanyisa only became more motivated to pull the rest of the plant out of the ground. Even with all the easy-to-grab grass around her, Khanyisa was fixated on this one plant.
Finally, Khanyisa bent down one final time, using her trunk to get as much of the plant into her mouth as possible. With her conquest satisfied, Khanyisa moved on to easier plants to practice her foraging on.
