Raccoon whisperer James Blackwood fed 17 raccoons on a windy Thursday night. He provided them with 120 hotdogs, a bucket of cookies, a container of dry food, and a bag of Cheerios.
He has been feeding the raccoons for the past 20 years. Blackwood’s late wife was the one who started the feeding project. He made good on his promise to continue her selfless work.
At first, there were only 14 raccoons that he spotted, then once he started feeding them, he counted 3 more. Blackwood was familiar with some of them, but there are always some new ones who arrive.
Some of the raccoons politely came up and took the food from Blackwood’s hands. Others were more feisty, and Blackwood still fed them by tossing the treats towards them.
After the hotdogs were finished, he went inside to get more food. There was plenty of food to go around, but some of the raccoons still fought each other. Blackwood scolded them, and they listened to him.
Blackwood threw cookies on the porch and poured out dry food and Cheerios for the hungry critters. Most of the raccoons are orphans, and with his help, they can survive in the woods.
The raccoons grow calmer as their bellies fill up with food and warmth. A wind chime flutters with the wind, and Blackwood watches with satisfaction as his friends get their fill.
