On what seemed like a typical day, Liz received an odd phone call from her neighbor that would change the lives of her little family forever. There was an adorable disabled kitten that was crying out from his bushes.
When Liz saw the white kitten meowing from the bushes, she knew she wanted to help. She brought out tuna to lure the little one out, and when little Huckleberry came out, Liz immediately took her to the vet.
After seeing Huckleberry, the vet told Liz that one of Huckleberry’s legs would need to be amputated. But for now, they needed to help Huckleberry settle into her new life first.
The moment Huckleberry settled in with Liz, she started purring immediately. Even with her leg that could not support her, she was full of life and playful. But there was still one problem. Huckleberry had to get used to Liz’s Labrador, Luca.
Liz was nervous at first because Luca tended to get overly excited when he saw cats, but gradually, Luca learned to let Huckleberry come to her. And one day, the two of them started to play and snuggle.
Shortly afterward, Huckleberry had surgery to remove her leg, but according to her mom, she did not skip a beat after the amputation. When she did not respond well to the cone treatment, Liz crafted a sweater for Huckleberry out of one of her slipper socks.
As she grew older, Huckleberry and Luca grew even closer. She even grew to enjoy everything her older brother liked, like playing fetch. “It’s just clear she’s being raised by a Labrador,” said Liz. “She’s truly a miracle cat.”
