Man puts himself in danger to help exhausted baby moose

Andrea Bock was on her commute home one Sunday morning in Clam Gulch, Alaska, when all the traffic suddenly came to a halt. When she glanced to see what had people stopping on the two-lane highway, she was surprised to see a moose blocking the road.

Then, Andrea realized it was not just one moose, but a moose mother and her baby. The mother stood in the middle of the street, watching as the baby moose struggled to get over the guardrail.

With her calf stuck on the other side of the guardrail and lines of cars piling up around her, the mother moose was starting to get nervous. And the moment only got more tense as the minutes dragged on.

For 20 minutes, Andrea watched the baby moose attempt to get over the guardrail and mess up every time. When the calf tried to go around the guardrail, the mother would panic about how close her little one was to the cars and bring her baby back to the middle.

Joe Tate was also stuck in traffic on his way home from a fishing trip. After waiting with the rest of the drivers, Joe decided to see if he could help. He would do his best to reunite this anxious family.

Being near a wild moose was dangerous at the best of times, but this mother was stressed and protective of her little one. Joe did not let that stop him. He walked over to the baby moose and lifted it over the guardrail to join its mother.

Fortunately, Joe’s friends had devised a plan to keep Joe safe while he pulled off this daring feat, moving their trailer between Joe and the mother moose. “It could have gone bad, and I understand and know that,” Tate told interviewers, “but it did go for the best, and it was worth the risk that I took.”
