When Sammy was walking along the sidewalk, he noticed an odd lump on the cement. When he bent down to examine it, he realized it was a flightless baby hummingbird.
Being the compassionate and thoughtful man he was, he took the hummingbird into his home. Sammy was determined to help the malnourished and scared hummingbird. He named the little one Flit.
Even though he had never had a bird in his home before, he set up a makeshift home for her. He even made her a place to perch using a popsicle stick.
Sammy’s main goal was always to get Flit ready to be released, so he began by encouraging her to fly. He always kept his voice low, so he would not scare her.
Flit made a huge leap in progress once Sammy realized that like most animals, she was motivated by food. So, he held up the syringe he used to feed her and had her hover to sip the sugar water.
While he was ecstatic at her progress, her journey was not complete yet. She still could not stay airborne for long. He started integrating more natural elements into his home to prepare her for the wild. At one point, he even wrapped his syringe in paper mâché to look like a flower.
When release day came, it was an emotional day for the whole family, but as soon as she flew straight to her food source in the trees, Sammy knew Flit was going to be just fine.
