You’re likely familiar with Lowe’s, the household name in home improvement. Its reputation as a company that values veterans is well-documented. But one store in the Lone Star State of Texas took this commitment to new heights, hiring not just a veteran but his devoted service dog too.

Clay Luthy, an Air Force veteran, faced a struggle that’s all too common amongst his peers – reintegration into civilian life, exacerbated by a need for his service dog, Charlotte. His job search had been far from fruitful, with doors seemingly closing on him at every turn. Until Lowe’s opened their door, and their hearts, to both him and his four-legged companion.
It was a special day for us, their new colleagues and friends, as we celebrated the induction of Clay and Charlotte, both donning the red-and-blue Lowe’s vests. They brought more than just workforce efficiency; they brought a sense of unity and inspiration that echoed through the aisles of our store in Abilene, Texas.

Charlotte is much more than a pet for Clay. She’s a lifeline, an indispensable part of his support system post his courageous military service. He bravely served us with deployments to Uzbekistan and Qatar, enduring the physical toll and the psychological aftermath of service.
Clay and Charlotte’s story is a beautiful testament to resilience, the power of companionship, and the capacity for inclusivity in our workplaces. A lifeline in the form of a puppy grew to become an unwavering pillar of support, aiding Clay in his battles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). When many frowned upon Charlotte’s presence, Lowe’s chose to welcome them as a team.

The video below encapsulates their journey, a poignant narrative of acceptance and recognition of the human experience’s full package. Our store isn’t just a place to buy your hardware essentials; it’s a community where we celebrate each other’s unique stories, champion inclusive practices, and understand that every employee is so much more than just a cog in the machine.
Together, Clay and Charlotte are not just Lowe’s employees – they’re symbols of resilience, bearers of change, and carriers of a story that deserves to be shared far and wide. So, as you dive into this video, remember to appreciate this inspiring duo’s journey, struggles, and triumphant triumph. Share their story because more workplaces need to know the value of inclusivity and the power of embracing the whole individual.
