When people describe leopards, the first word to come to mind is not usually nurturing. Often people will describe leopards as majestic, powerful or even scary, but this video of a mom and her baby cubs showed a different side.
For the first few months of their lives, leopards are far from the predators they will become. As cubs, they rely on their parents for food, shelter and protection. For this reason, it is uncommon to see leopard cubs without their mom nearby.
So, sugarcane farmers in the Umbraj village were surprised when they stumbled upon a quartet of leopard babies in their field. The farmers decided to call for help from rescuers.
When the Maharashta Forest Department and Wildlife SOS arrived at the scene, the cubs were dehydrated, hungry and anxious about all the people around them. The rescue team did their best to make the rescue as easy as possible for the stressed babies.
After rescuing the leopard cubs, Dr. Nikhil Bangar checked the cubs’ health and advised that they reunite the leopard babies with their mom for the sake of the village as well as the babies.
To ensure a safe return of the little ones, Dr. Nikhil and the rescue team placed the four babies in a box with holes in the lid. They placed a rock on top of the box to ensure the babies did not escape and set up cameras to monitor the reunion.
Not long after they left the babies, the mama leopard arrived, and she seemed relieved to see her little ones. She gave her four babies loving kisses and transported them to a safer location. What a good mom!
