A baby elephant’s day is never dull. There is always lots to do and to see for Khanyisa, one of the young elephants at the HERD orphanage in South Africa.
This young albino elephant wakes up before the rest of the herd. She is excited to see her friend Stavros, one of the volunteers, because she knows he’ll feed her milk.
She begins her day with a full stomach and will consume seven gallons of milk before the day is done. While she waits for the rest of the herd to get up, she hangs out with some other friends.
Khanyisa and her sheep pals listen to some nearby monkeys while the visiting German shepherds bark happily. The young elephant also enjoys spending time with her human pals as well.
Her buddy Stavros showers her with sand to keep her cool in the hot sun. Her pale skin is particularly vulnerable to the sun’s harsh rays compared to her other elephant brethren.
Finally, the rest of the elephants are ready to take a walk in the wilderness. Khanyisa happily joins the herd and playfully marches alongside her friend Kumbura and the matriarch Tokwe.
Khanyisa is well cared for at the HERD orphanage. With the love of the human volunteers and the companionship of her fellow elephants, Khanyisa has everything a baby elephant could need.
