Orphan Elephant and Labrador’s Playful Bond

Elephant and Labrador playing, pure fun!

In the gentle waves of Myrtle Beach Safari in South Carolina, an extraordinary relationship blossoms between two very unlikely friends: Bubbles, a 9-feet tall, 4-ton heavy elephant, and Bella, a lively black Labrador. Their story is not just a tale of friendship but also a lesson in empathy, compassion, and the deep connections that can form between different species.

The sanctuary has witnessed many heartwarming animal partnerships, but the bond between Bella and Bubbles is truly special. Both friends share a love for the water, but what connects them on a much deeper level is that they are both orphans.

Bubbles, one of the sanctuary’s resident elephants, became an orphan at a very young age, losing both her parents to the cruelty of poachers in a 20-year slaughter that devastated the local elephant population. Thankfully, she found her way to Myrtle Beach Safari, where she was rehabilitated and nourished. There, she met Bella, and the two have been inseparable since.

For Bella, jumping into the water and playing in the waves is just an ordinary day. But her jumping board is far from ordinary—it’s Bubbles herself! As Bella splashes and paddles nearby, Bubbles is content just soaking, watching her friend with what can only be described as a loving gaze. They even enjoy long walks together, though Bella has to run to keep up with Bubbles’ big strides.

The two orphans, both in love with the water, found a home in each other. They have become more than friends; they are each other’s family. Bella treats her elephant friend like her own personal island, diving after balls and climbing on Bubbles’ back. She even stumbles over sometimes and rolls on the elephant’s trunk. In a way, Bubbles is Bella’s giant dog, and Bella is Bubbles’ strangely tiny elephant.

This extraordinary friendship takes place at Myrtle Beach Sanctuary, home to TIGERS (The Institute for Greatly Endangered and Rare Species), founded by Mahamayavi Antle with the vision of protecting wildlife. Today, there are only over 400,000 elephants across Africa, and the situation is still critical due to poaching and other issues like urban encroachment.

The story of Bella and Bubbles is more than a feel-good tale. It’s a stark reminder that we all share this world with incredible creatures that deserve our love, compassion, and protection. As we watch Bella and Bubbles play and enjoy each other’s company, we are reminded that kindness can transcend size, shape, and even species.

The connection between a dog and an elephant at Myrtle Beach Safari is a symbol of hope, a beacon of love that shows us that friendships can form in the most unexpected places. It’s a call to action for all of us to look beyond the differences and recognize the shared emotions and bonds that connect all living beings.
