Orphaned elephant didn’t have any friends, then a dog hopped on her head

In most cases, dogs choose to be best friends with people or other dogs. But this water-loving dog, Bella, found an unlikely bestie in the form of the orphan elephant, Bubbles.

Before she came to the Myrtle Beach Safari in South California, Bubbles lost her mother to ivory poachers. Animal lovers discovered the orphaned little one and brought her to live in her new home.

Adjusting to her new life on the safari was hard for the baby elephant. The team did everything to provide her the socialization and enrichment she would have had in the wild.

One day, they noticed that Bubbles loved to play in the water. So, they commissioned workers to build a pool for the elephant. When construction finished, one of the contractors abandoned his Black Labrador, Bella, in the sanctuary.

Bubbles and Bella might have been two completely different species, but they bonded over their love of water. “The pool and eventually the river presented these two the opportunity to interact in a way that developed a long and lasting friendship,” the safari said in their short video on the pair.

Bubbles and Bella spent all their time in the water. Bella would swim in the water and climb onto her elephant bestie’s head. The Black Labrador could not have loved her elephant friend more.

Bubbles was also just as enamored by her canine friend. When the two of them were not playing in the pool, they snuggled together on the grass. Tragedy might have brought the two of them together, but they could not be happier.
