Because of the media and their portrayal, people often view police dogs as vicious and dangerous. This couple’s German Shepherd, Sonny, showed he could be both a working dog and a family dog to his human baby sister.

When John and Lainey first had Sonny, he was their sole focus, so they were anxious to see how the dog would react to having baby Reagen in the house.
As soon as John put on his police uniform, Sonny was in “police dog mode.” “He hops in the car, and he is all business,” said John. “He’s always worked up, pacing in the back of the car.”

But all of that changed when Sonny and John came home. With his little sister, Sonny was gentle, caring and patient. He would lie beside Reagan and let her play with his feet and his ears, things he never would have done while he was on the job.
Sonny used to be a much more independent dog, but once Reagan was in his life, he chose to spend all his time beside her. Sometimes, he even watched over her while she slept.

When John and Lainey filmed the video, the couple was expecting another baby girl soon, and they were confident that the little one would have a loving canine older brother waiting for her.
Lainey and John were confident that with good old Sonny to show her the way, Reagan will have a perfect example of how to be a caring and understanding older sister.
