When Starry Skies Equine Rescue’s Emily Roat first took in the white horse, Champagne, the poor equine was scared of everyone and would run when Emily called for her.

Before Champagne came to Starry Skies Equine Rescue, she was treated terribly as a workhorse. She had several scars on her back, and no one had trimmed her feet in over ten months, according to the vet.
Every time someone called her name, Champagne thought she would be put back to work. Emily and the rest of the team worked hard to show her she was safe around people.

They started with trimming her feet, which helped her pain a lot. Then, they gave her what may have been her first bath. To help her become more comfortable around people, the lead volunteer of Starry Skies brought in her kids to socialize with Champagne.
Champagne did much better with the little ones, and she seemed to enjoy being brushed by the kids. Champagne was still nervous around Emily, so Emily brought in her dog, Remy, to help.

Remy was an adorable puppy who was full of infectious energy that even made Champagne want to join the fun. The two of them would run together out in the pasture, a step that was crucial to Champagne’s recovery.
Remy helped teach Champagne that it was safe to play with people, and because of her, Champagne was able to make her way to her forever home, where she could start a new journey in her quest for happiness.
