Scared rescue horse steps into her new role as therapy animal

When the horse, Grace, first arrived at the Starry Skies Rescue, the horse would not stop pacing in front of the fences, and when it came time to eat, she refused.

Emily was one of the caretakers for Grace, and she admitted that in the first few weeks, she worried about the horse. “She didn’t want to lay down,” said Emily. “She was really anxious.”

To make sure Grace got the nutrients she needed, volunteers would feed her in handfuls until she had enough food. They tried brushing her and seeing if that helped, but Grace remained aloof. Emily and the team decided to give her as much time as they could.

It turned out time was exactly what Grace needed. Two months after her arrival, Grace’s emotional state improved dramatically. “She stopped pacing around, she eats regularly now and she started to become more acquainted with the other horses,” said Emily.

Finally, Grace was ready for her adoption day. That was when Scott reached out. Emily knew Grace would be in good hands with Scott. “He is good with Grace,” said Emily. “We are so happy for what’s next.”

Scott was the barn manager at O.A.T.S Therapeutic Equestrian Center. At this unique non-profit organization, Grace would work with children and adults with special needs.

Scott was confident that Grace would be a perfect fit for her new role. “She’s very kind and gentle and patient with the people,” said Scott. “She already seems happy here.”
