For many mammals, including humans, the connection between a mother and her babies is almost sacred. For that reason, many viewers came together to watch this heartwarming interaction between a mother otter and her newborn.
When the nature photographer, Suzi Eszterhas, visited the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California, she was expecting to see the mother otter be shy about showing affection to her adorable baby.
Most of the time, otters are not comfortable with humans seeing their babies, but this otter was used to having attention from humans, so she had no qualms about showing her newborn love.
Suzi Eszterhas used a long-range lens to snap photos of the mom and her baby bonding in the water. While the mom floated in the tide pool, she cleaned and kissed her newborn.
For a long time, the baby rode in first class on the mother otter’s tummy, something that otters will do with their babies to keep the little ones warm and dry.
But even the best moms have to eat sometimes. Fortunately, baby otters have fur that can help them float, so the mom was able to leave her otter pup floating while she dived into the water for food.
The otter mom still swam to the surface frequently to check on her baby. “She did this so many times; it made me feel like a babysitter. It was adorable and it also really showed how vulnerable and trusting wild animals can be,” Ms. Eszterhas said.
