When Samm and her partner Alexis first met the puppy Sage, it was love at first sight. And when they found out that the sweet, little boy was sick, they wanted to take him home even more.
“I just remember seeing him, and it broke my heart,” said Samm. “He was this chubby little puppy with his skin all cracked. Without me knowing his backstory, I remember turning to Alexis and I’m like, ‘This is the one. I can’t leave here without him.’”
On the way home, Samm and Alexis were not sure if he would be comfortable in his new home, but the second he walked inside, “he was just running around the living room and picking up toys.”
But taking care of the Sage was not going to be easy. Sage’s skin condition made him mostly bald, and his skin was covered in scabs. Samm and Alexis had to keep him clothed all the time and applied coconut oil to his skin to help it heal.
To make sure their puppy stayed healthy, Samm and Alexis woke up every morning to feed him his medicine and give him extra vitamins to keep him on track for his recovery.
In addition to his skin condition, Sage also had a respiratory infection. Even with all his medicine and baths, there were times that Samm and Alexis worried he might not make it through the night.
Then one day, Sage’s condition drastically improved. Thanks to his moms’ constant efforts, Sage made a full recovery. “He went from being a sick, scared puppy to being so happy,” said Samm.
