It was 100 degrees Fahrenheit on the day Claudia found the baby chicken, Sweet Dee, abandoned under a truck. Without a second thought, Claudia rescued the little one and brought her into the safety of her home.

The chick was one of the smallest birds Claudia had seen. She fit snugly into the palm of Claudia’s hands. After a few days, Sweet Dee formed a strong bond with Claudia.

Sweet Dee followed Claudia wherever she went, sitting on her shoulder while she did her exercises, nuzzling into the crook of her elbow while she watched TV and perching on the headrest of her desk chair.

The first time she saw grass was when Claudia took her to the park, but she was not sure what to think of the tall blades of grass, some that were even taller than her.

After some coaxing and multiple trips, the outside became Sweet Dee’s favorite place. With a couple more weeks of persistence, Sweet Dee felt comfortable enough to go out on her own.

Several weeks after taking Sweet Dee into her home, Claudia recognized that it was time to introduce Sweet Dee to other chickens and help her become part of a herd.

It took a little time for her to adjust, but eventually, Sweet Dee found the perfect new home at her sanctuary with the other birds. And the best part was Claudia still came to visit her and give her some love and attention.
