Tororo, a baby otter living in Japan with his biological mom Otsuyu, another adult otter named Odashi, and his loving human mom, became the centerpiece of a story that has melted hearts across the globe. Otters are a unique breed of mammals, members of the weasel family, found almost everywhere except Australia and Antarctica. Their dense fur, the densest among any animal kingdom, and their distinctive “spraints” or stinky poop, mark them as extraordinary creatures. According to some scientists, the unique odor, described as smelling like violets, comes from their seafood diet.
As lovable as they are, these playful beings sometimes need a good bath, and the video of baby Tororo’s first bath is something that has to be seen to be believed.
It began with Tororo still comfortably dozing on his bed. Shortly after waking up, his human mom decided to introduce him to a new experience—a bath inside a shallow pool. While the water was not even an inch deep, it was enough to cause this tiny otter some apprehension.
Mama Odashi, the adult otter, joined in, cleaning baby Tororo’s fur. Despite her gentle touch, Tororo’s reaction was far from pleased. The sound of his protest was clear, but both his moms (otter and human) lovingly persisted in cleaning the little stinker. When he was finally fresh and dry, mama Odashi gave his fur some finishing touches, ensuring they were all clean and glossy.
After that quick, somewhat bewildering dip, Tororo went back to what he does best—sleeping. It was an ordinary day in the life of this otter family, but the simple, loving interaction left millions feeling a bit more connected and cheerful.
