The Cruel Animal Farm Where Big Box Pet Stores Like Petco And PetSmart Get Their Pets

We’ve likely all heard about the horror of puppy mills. What you might not know is that puppies aren’t the only domesticated pets subjected to these cruel situations. In fact, most of the animals available at big-box pet stores have come from inhumane and cruel situations.

Recently, PETA undertook an in-depth, three month long investigation into Holmes Farm. This company provides animals to large pet store chains such as Petco, Petsmart, and others. Their findings were not pleasant.

Animals are kept in plastic crates, stacked on top of one another. The animals were rarely checked on, and their storage rooms reeked from lack of cleaning. If an animal got sick–and many of them were very sick–they would be left without veterinarian care, or otherwise ‘disposed’ of.

Scenes like these are the rule, not the exception, when it comes to animals purchased at large chain stores. Guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, they all come from similar places. If you’re thinking of bringing a new pet into your home, consider adoption. Even cute little gerbils can be found at rescue centers.

This video of PETA’s investigation is graphic, but the message it imparts is important. What did you think? Leave us a comment, we’d love to hear from you!
