Owl’s ‘mama’ instincts kick in seeing two orphaned chicks after her own eggs fail to hatch

As I witnessed a tawny owl’s nurturing instincts kick in, it was like watching a tale as old as time unfold right before my eyes. Luna, the owl in question, is an epitome of how nature’s embrace knows no bounds, especially when it comes to motherhood.

In the heart of North Yorkshire, Robert E. Fuller, an artist and wildlife photographer, creates natural habitats for wildlife to thrive. Within his garden, he sets up nesting boxes equipped with cameras to observe the animals he seeks to paint. This not only aids his artistic pursuit but also brings joy to the simple act of watching these creatures in their daily life.

But Robert’s dedication goes beyond observation. He is a beacon of hope for the lost, the wounded, and the orphaned, especially baby owls or “owlets” as they’re tenderly called. His YouTube channel is filled with touching tales of rescue and nurture, and amongst them, the tale of Luna stands out beautifully.

Luna herself was once an orphan. Rescued in 2017, she was lovingly raised by another pair of owls at Fuller’s sanctuary. As she grew into a majestic tawny owl, she longed for offspring of her own. Yearning to feel the flutters of life beneath her, Luna tried to hatch her own eggs for two consecutive years. However, nature had different plans; her eggs remained unhatched, leaving her with an empty nest.

Yet, destiny had its own twist. When Fuller came across two orphaned owlets in dire need of maternal love, he saw an opportunity. He gently placed them in Luna’s nest, hoping that her innate maternal instincts would shine through.

Returning to her nest, Luna’s heart must have raced as she peeked inside. And what she did next was nothing short of a miracle. Without hesitation, she lovingly embraced the two orphaned babies, enveloping them under her wings, a protective gesture known as “brooding”. This act helps regulate the baby birds’ body temperatures until they are strong and feathered enough to do it on their own.

Luna’s joy was palpable, but she wasn’t the only one rejoicing. Her mate, Bomber, was equally elated to welcome the little additions. Although Luna, ever the protective mother, made sure Bomber knew his role—fetching food for their new family.

These tiny owlets, now under the tender care of Luna and Bomber, are thriving. Soon, they will spread their wings and embrace the wild, carrying with them the love and warmth of a mother who chose to love beyond bloodlines.

Robert E. Fuller beautifully captures these emotions in his videos. As you watch Luna’s journey, let it remind you of the boundless capacity for love in every creature’s heart. Cherish these stories, share them with your loved ones, and always remember: when it comes to offering a home, adopt, don’t shop.

Share because your action will give animals a voice.
