John Dornellas, who works with Coldwater Alaska, spends most of his time in the water, offering boating trips in the Halibut Cove Lagoon. One day, he witnessed a heart-wrenching scene unfold before his eyes: an orca appeared in front of him, but it was not alone. In the distance, John noticed an otter swimming for its life, already spotted by the orca and being pursued.
Frantic to escape, the otter swam as fast as it could toward John’s boat. As the otter circled the boat searching for an escape route, John lost sight of it. He called out to his companion, Chantrelle, in another boat, who informed him that the otter had climbed up the back of his boat.
Indeed, the otter was there, but it wasn’t the only animal nearby. The orca, aware that the otter was on the boat, circled John’s boat, searching for its prey. The terrified otter didn’t know what to do and eventually jumped inside John’s boat. John tried to calm the frantic otter, who seemed determined to jump back into the water. John suspected that the otter might have a companion it needed to rescue.
The otter leapt back into the water but then returned to John’s boat for refuge. It was clear the otter was frightened, unsure if John posed a threat. John sensed the otter’s fear and tried to reassure it that it was safe in the boat. Meanwhile, the orca continued circling the boat, and John felt helpless, unable to do anything but try not to aggravate the situation.
Eventually, the otter stopped trying to get back into the water and dragged itself to the front of the boat to catch its breath. John needed to pick up passengers, so he waited for the right moment when the orca swam a little farther away. Once the orca was at a safe distance, John started the boat and drove off toward his passengers, leaving the otter alone to avoid any potential bites.
Once the otter sensed that it was safe, it jumped back into the water and swam away. This clever otter had outwitted a hungry orca and hitched a ride to safety.
