Rescued bears taste freedom and joy for the first time in a decade

In the shadow of an Armenian restaurant, two brown bears named Misha and Dasha were imprisoned in a tiny, suffocating cage. For ten excruciating years, they served as tourist attractions, their days filled with pacing, head-banging, and climbing bars in a desperate quest for joy. But far more than boredom trapped them in agony; the riverbank cage would flood, threatening to drown these magnificent creatures in a watery abyss.

A particular flood still resonates in the memory of the rescuers; the water rose so high that Misha and Dasha almost lost their lives. This incident led International Animal Rescue (IAR) to push even harder to free the bears from their iron confines.

With the relentless efforts of IAR and the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets (FPWC), the restaurant owners finally relented, handing over Misha and Dasha’s care to those who truly understood their needs.

Freedom came with the cutting of metal bars, a sedative for safety, and a journey to a mountainside sanctuary. A haven where the bears could rediscover what it meant to roam, to play, to follow the natural instincts that had been suppressed for so long.

Upon arriving at their sanctuary, Misha and Dasha retreated into a cave to hibernate for winter. When they emerged with the spring’s first rays, they weren’t alone. Dasha had given birth to two vibrant and healthy cubs.

Unaware that Dasha had been pregnant, the rescuers were stunned, elated, and filled with renewed faith. After surviving so much torment, Dasha had a family of her own. Her appetite during recovery had been a sign of something far more profound, something that only blossomed in the safety of their new home.

The cubs are thriving under Dasha’s careful watch, a testament to the natural mother within her. “Now, seeing her with her two little cubs is simply beautiful,” said Vicky Mkrtchyan of FPWC, reflecting on the transformation from a miserable life behind bars to a protective mother in a nurturing environment.

Misha and Dasha’s story is one of resilience, redemption, and the power of love and dedication to overcome the darkest of circumstances. They went through unimaginable hardship, but now they are in a safe place, savoring their lives and newfound freedom.
